Through education, communication, and public activity, the Washington Osteoporosis Coalition aims to prevent osteoporosis and reduce the number of broken bones and medical problems caused by the disease

Osteoporosis is preventable.  With the right foods, exercise, and bone-enhancing medicines, you can slow or stop bone loss.

To protect your bones:

  • Be physically active every day.

  • Make your home safe.  Reduce hazards that can cause you to fall and break a bone.

  • Talk with your doctor about medical conditions you have and medicines you take that can weaken bones.  Discuss ways to protect your bones while treating other problems.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.  Being underweight raises the risk of fracture and bone loss.

  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol use.  Smoking and heavy alcohol use lowers bone mass and increases risk of broken bones.

  • Get enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet.  Calculate your calcium intake here: Calcium CalculatorRead about vitamin D, its importance in bone health, and current recommendations here: vitamin D.
